The fires that have ravaged Bergen, and the battles against them, have perhaps been the most dominant factor in the development of the city of Bergen. Bergen has one of the world's greatest collections of fire-related artefacts with firefighting equipment dating back to the 17th century. We also have a unique collection of fire engines and photographs. Last but not least we have a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers, all with their own experiences, memories and burning interest in fire history. The old main fire station from 1888 is at our disposal. The City Museum wants to open the collection to the general public by establishing a fire museum in the old main fire station from 1888 in the city centre. This would be a valuable addition to the experience of the historical Bergen, and a major public attraction!
